Good copy sells products, draws clients in and acts as your window on the internet world, so learning to write effectively is time well spent.

But it’s not some mystical art unveiled only to a chosen few - anyone can do it if they take on board some basic simple rules and processes.

Basic Rules of Copywriting

Research - both in terms of knowing your own product or service plus how the competition sell themselves - is a step you can’t skip if you want to write effective copy. Once you know why people buy the product or service, how they buy it, what they use it for, and what about it is most important to them, you then have the knowledge to be able to move on to sketching outlines of posts or pages for your site.

With this done, you can start to draft copy, making sure to avoid jargon and meaningless phrases where possible. Be specific and tell people what your product or service will mean for them, and making any buying or sign-up pages as simple as possible.

Ideally, wait a day or two before coming back to your completed copy for a final polish, and consider getting feedback from friends or colleagues whose judgement you trust before you hit the publish button.
