Kanban ordering for aircraft parts using TeaCommerce & Umbraco

Last week we put a new site live for our customer Rediweld Mouldings who manufacture injection moulded parts for a number of different uses.

They had an online ordering system in use which was based on Classic ASP, was unreliable, difficult to manage and required developer intervention when new inventory was added.

The system forms an integral part of a Kanban ordering system for aircraft parts. Kanban ordering can be a very effective way to reduce waste within a productions system, but is reliant on effective systems. When Rediweld’s customer runs low on stock levels, they use the kanban ordering tool to order resupply just-in-time to meet production needs.

When the existing system failed to reliably send orders through in two consecutive months we knew something needed to be done.

When demonstrated how TeaCommerce order workflow could be used, to easily replicate the kanban system. We had already implemented a TeaCommerce base site in another part of the Rediweld group and so the business case was easily made.

Our TeaCommerce solution uses an updated responsive template based on Foundation making it mobile ready, and is easily edited by Rediweld experienced Umbraco editors when new inventory, or customers are added. We have simplified the workflow by drawing much of the customer delivery information from the logged in Umbraco Member, and we send email confirmation to both the Rediweld production team and the customer using Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) to improve the reliability and deliverability of emails.

Its still early days but we’re very happy with the solution.
